The importance of employee engagement through HR

Our Human Resources Manager, Alicia McMahon, looks at how the company has grown within the last 12 months, the importance of employee engagement and building a positive work culture with events such as our annual summer social.

Growth in the company

Our annual staff social events have become something that everyone at the Seventy Ninth Group looks forward to, and this year was no exception. When working in a company like ours, employee engagement is incredibly important. Over the last few months, we have sustained the growth we saw last year, with the expansion of different departments within the company, including HR, marketing, and investments. With the rate at which we have grown, it is important that we have HR policies in place that protect our staff and their working environment.

Our staff events encourage everyone at the company to relax and socialise with their colleagues, and especially with so many new starters in the last few months, it gives everyone a chance to get to know each other. It also allows us to celebrate our success in the last 12 months, giving our staff a chance to let their hair down! Being built from family values, the atmosphere at our HQ means we have developed a good rapport between ourselves, which can only be strengthened by events such as the staff social, really helping the staff to bond.

Our summer social event

This year, we decided to hold our event at House of Ivy in Southport. We were entertained with bingo and magic tricks and had lovely food and cocktails, as well as a DJ to keep us all dancing! Thankfully, the weather was on our side, so we managed to enjoy the sunshine too!

I think it is incredibly important that staff have things like the summer event to look forward to, as it helps to promote a positive work culture, giving our staff more motivation in their working days. There are several other benefits that we have put in place as the company has grown to ensure that staff are rewarded for their hard work. From a HR perspective, it was lovely to watch everyone enjoy themselves and have a laugh with each other. Having events like our summer socials create a lovely atmosphere around the office, and I hope this is reflected in the way we work as a company, particularly in how we have grown in the last 12 months.

HR presence at the Seventy Ninth Group

I take my role very seriously at the Seventy Ninth Group. I have to navigate and support various personal needs of staff, from training and development to changes in department functions and ensuring everyone remains informed of company policies and procedures.

Having business empathy is critical, as it is important to always be there for employees, whether it be for emotional support or to enhance skills with training. We always say that we have an open-door policy here at the Seventy Ninth Group. No query is too big or too small, and it is important that we have a strong presence within the business to maintain our positive work culture.

There could be challenges that we may face being a fast-moving company, so it is essential that HR policies are put in place in order to protect our employees. Whether it be changes in department or restructuring within the business, I feel we have recognised that our staff are our greatest asset. Therefore, these policies are crucial to ensure that the day-to-day running of the business is smooth.

Overall, I believe that our summer staff social event has become an integral part of our positive work culture and know that it will continue to be a success. I can’t wait for the next one!
